All about the Ludlow VIP experience

Ludlow Racecourse is one of the oldest racecourses in the UK. Having originally staged flat races, the Shropshire-based horse racing venue is now exclusively a National Hunt venue.

There are two courses right now at Ludlow Racecourse. The first is the Hurdles course. This is staged over one-and-a-half miles, featuring six hurdles per circuit of the track. Then there’s the Steeplechase course, which is just one mile and three furlongs. It has nine fences per circuit, comprising six plain fences, a couple of open ditches and a grandstand water jump.

As Ludlow Racecourse is a National Hunt venue, race meetings are staged between the beginning of October and the middle of May. There’s 16 meetings per year, to be exact, with the Forbra Gold Cup the biggest feature race of the season at Ludlow, attracting multiple horses racing for the coveted Handicap Chase races over three miles in March. Within the categories of the leading online bookmakers, Ludlow’s race meetings feature prominently alongside other historic racecourses like Windsor, Newmarket and Epsom. Windsor, by the by, will be a welcome addition back into the Jumps fold from this December 25 years after it gave up jumping on cost grounds.

If you’re looking for a fun day out to celebrate a special occasion with family or friends, Ludlow Racecourse’s award-winning hospitality packages are well worth exploring. Overseen by Ludlow Racecourse’s assistant manager and hospitality executive, Diane Thomas, there are several VIP experiences you can book online.

The Jubilee Stand

The Jubilee Stand is one of the best ways to experience a Ludlow race meeting. Affording spectacular panoramic views of the Shropshire countryside, it’s a great location for sports fans and very accessible too thanks to an internal lift.

Private boxes

Located within the first floor of Ludlow’s iconic Jubilee Stand, you’ll find premium private boxes. Formally opened in 2003 by HRH The Prince of Wales, these private boxes offer the ultimate VIP experience at Ludlow Racecourse. These boxes overlook the finishing post of the race track, giving you the best view of the action. Step out onto the viewing galleries from the box and you’ll have a bird’s eye experience that’s better than watching on television.

The package for private boxes start from £120 per person, plus VAT. A minimum of 12 guests are required. If you have 30+ guests interested, it’s possible to secure interconnecting private boxes to share the occasion across two boxes. You’ll get a delicious three-course meal and your very own Tote betting area.

The Plymouth Box

This is one of the latest buildings at Ludlow Racecourse, located between the Grandstand and the Clive Pavilion. During race meetings, the ground floor area is open exclusively to guests and Members of Ludlow Racecourse, creating a VIP feel. On the floor above, overlooking the winner’s enclosure and paddock, there’s the Plymouth Box.

The Plymouth Box can host up to 40 guests, with the opportunity to watch the race action from above, after a three-course carvery meal at the Plymouth Carvery Restaurant. Bag a window table for your group to get spectacular views of the circuit and peruse the race day programme for the action ahead.

The Clive Pavilion

The Clive Pavilion opened in 1992 and, prior to the launch of the Jubilee Stand, was the only hospitality venue at Ludlow Racecourse. Although it may be starting to show its age, the Clive Pavilion is still a fun and exclusive place to enjoy a day’s racing at Ludlow.

Open to all Day Members at Ludlow, there’s a well-stocked bar, café and carvery. There’s also a dedicated Tote betting desk, with other live racing meetings broadcast on 50” screens throughout the Pavilion.

The Windsor Marquee

Situated opposite the Grandstand, the Windsor Marquee is an alternative VIP hospitality option, capable of seating between 300 and 500 guests. The marquee is equipped with its own televisions and PA system, not to mention its own betting desk for the utmost convenience.

It’s not always in use for weekday meetings at Ludlow, but the feature race meetings like Ladies’ Day and Countryside Day usually see it packed to the rafters.
